⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: Tohru Adachi
Age: 28
Canon: Persona 4
Canon Point: Post-Episode Adachi, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax

Background: Adachi at the Shin Megami Tensei wiki!

Personality: Adachi is... Well, there are many Adachis, as there are many of all of us. Persona is a series that is very big on the true self, the self we show others, and the self we hide- Adachi manifests the first two, but he has nothing to hide. Those who know his true self know Adachi, because he is not a man who is ashamed of anything he does.

To those who first meet Adachi, he comes off as... well, "scatterbrained" is very generous. He's a clumsy, kind of naive man, which is not good for a police detective; he tends to run his mouth on sensitive subjects, and make leaps of logic that no evidence in the world could possibly back up. His partner Dojima is constantly frustrated with his inability to act professionally, despite his best attempts to act like a hero around the Investigation Team. Despite this, he's very much a model police officer in his actual attitude; he's eager to serve, he reassures people on a regular basis that the police will make things right, and he cares for the safety of the citizens of Inaba. While he may be a bit of an idiot, his heart is in the right place. In addition to this, he's good with kids, despite his... everything; when hanging out with Dojima's daughter, Nanako, he tends to dote on her despite his misanthropy, helping her draw things and helping to tutor her, as well as showing her magic tricks.

Dig down a layer. Adachi is like an onion.

Beneath the surface, and outside of work, Adachi is a bit of an antisocial loner, and a curmudgeon. Despite his attentiveness to the job while Dojima is around, he's a massive slacker; whenever he has the opportunity, he'll stand around the lobby of Junes, preferring to do literally nothing than to do his job. Despite living in Inaba, his distaste for it is clear- when he confides in Yu, he makes it obvious that he really hates the town, and resents being forced to work in the "boonies". A city dweller at heart, Adachi resents being somewhere where there's so little to do and where everyone knows each other; he's a man who craves entertainment, and the city suits him just fine, able to hang out and do whatever he wants and never see the same face twice. He's also, despite being a cop, a massively bitter man towards people who crave his attention- an old woman, who treats him as a son, is nothing but friendly (if a little annoying) to him, and he does nothing but spit venom at her and talk shit behind her back. He wants to be left alone, to his own devices, in a place where he can mess around; he's got a few people he likes, sure, but that doesn't mean he wants strangers walking around him and telling him things. People aren't why he's a cop.

Dig down one more layer. The true self.

While he may come off as simply an ill-tempered, antisocial man, the true Adachi is... more sociopathic, than anything. His ability to completely put on a masquerade as being a helpful person, while actually secretly being responsible for all the murders and events that have transpired in Inaba, is based in his absolute distaste for people- he doesn't care about anyone, or anything, except himself, and he has absolutely no problem with lying as long as he can keep the game up. The moment he's caught out in a lie, he simply retreats to protect himself and returns right back to taunting anyone who comes after him.

Adachi is a man with no hope, and no desire to improve the world. He sees the world as shit, and everyone in it as idiots who don't understand their lives; he's worked all his life, he was an A+ student, and all he has to show for it is a shitty position in the backwoods of Japan with no hope for progression. He joined the police just so he could carry a gun. Adachi is not a man who cares about the world, or anyone in it. (More on that below.) His murders weren't even based in any real motive; he's a misogynist, who sees any inclination of a woman towards being "loose" as a direct insult, and simply killed them for fun and out of anger. He has absolutely no regret, and sees nothing he did as wrong- everything is a game to him. Why worry about killing a few pawns? Nothing matters, in the end. Everyone's set for doom anyway.

Despite this, Adachi has a few cracks in this facade. He attempts to make himself out to be a complete monster, albeit a necessary one; an empty husk of a man who cares about nothing other than himself and entertainment. This, however, is not completely the case.

Even though he attempts to sever his connection to everyone he interacted with, there are a few people Adachi genuinely cannot bring himself to stop caring about- Yu, Dojima, and Nanako. These bonds he built, though he resents them, are important to him; despite his lack of regret, when Yu defeats him, he decides to play by the rules of the world and cooperate with the police, and never goes back on this word. Dojima, as well, is his friend, and he reluctantly allows him to visit him in prison, despite the animosity the two should have for each other. While he doesn't understand bonds- The world is shit as always, why bother with anyone in it?- these few bonds are important to him.

Important enough, in fact, that at the end of Ultimax he bands together with Yu to save the world- Much of this is because of his distaste for Sho Minazuki, someone he views as a shallow imitation of his own world views, but he secretly aids Yu throughout the game and even puts himself in danger to save the boy, something he would absolutely never consider doing for anyone else. This experience seems to have slightly shaded him; while he still has no care for the world as a whole, he admits that there might be some value to individual relationships. He lost the game, after all, and there's no winning next time unless he adapts his strategy to the winner, right?

Abilities: Adachi is a Persona user, but not one in a normal way. Generally, the Persona is a manifestation of one's ability to see your true self, and to accept the negative things about yourself; doing so allows you to use the great power of your id to fight Shadows and conquer them. Adachi, however, has nothing to hide from himself, and he has a rampant ego; as such, he never had to conquer a Shadow to gain his Persona, and the Persona itself is somewhat corrupt and Shadow-like itself, blended in a mix of negativity and the mask Adachi puts on. Appropriately, it acts rather erratically.

His Persona, Magatsu-Izanagi, is a corrupted mirror of Izanagi, Yu's persona. Both of them are manifestations of the thunder god Izanagi, and as such electrical spells of the Zio family are their primary speciality, allowing Adachi to summon lightning at will. Adachi, however, thanks to his corrupted power, also has access to certain spells of the ice, fire, and wind elements, as well as strong physical attacks.

In addition, Adachi (through his Persona) has some access to the power of the god Ameno-Sagiri that once possessed him; he can summon fog, as well as use a powerful skill known as Fall to Yomi that summons the manifestation of a person's negativity to kill them. (This will not be something he ever uses, but feel free to tone it down if you like.)

His Persona primarily manifests with powers of fear. Through a skill known as Evil Smile, Magatsu-Izanagi can strike terror into the hearts of foes; by following up with the skill Ghastly Wail, he can do massive amounts of damage to anyone who is afraid. Nerf this.

Finally, Adachi is a skilled marksman, and very capable with his gun. He also likes pretending to stab people with it.

Alignment: Peromei. "Despair" suits Adachi well- While he manifests it as ennui and not as overt depression, Adachi has absolutely no hope for the world, and is of the belief that everything is useless and will never change unless humanity is wiped clean.

Other: Adachi carries a gun- a Nambu Model 60 police issued revolver. It's a totally normal gun with no supernatural enhancements. He also has in his possession at this moment a fake toy gun that he modified to shoot real bullets, though it has no ammunition and it is unknown what type it even uses.
